The Arms of America

Do you remember that kid?
The one at your school,
who had it all. Who was
seriously cool and
looked good, stood tall.
Had the best clothes,
the best music,
even the best hair.
And you all wanted
 to be like them.
We all grow up,
and we all mature
but they seemed
Very centred, very secure.
Is that them, now?
Down that alley
with a gun in their hand
Just left a seedy bar,
sore as fuck
mad as hell
looking to kill
and kill some more.
Then they'll walk
and have a nice day.
It's a killer's theme park
done the American way.

Obama calls for calm

  1. A great poem, Hamish - I enjoyed reading it several times and then read it out loud too. Not surprising that we have all been moved to write after this dreadful acquittal - living in a country that doesn't support such lax gun ownership it's hard to understand these US laws anyway, but mix it up with racism and what seems to be a total lack of regard for human rights (unless you're white, of course) and I guess you're left with just that: 'a killer's theme park/ done the American way.'

  2. Thankyou Carlolyn it's great to think of my poem being read out loud on the other side of the world!
It is a dispiriting situation over there. And the only answer that significant amounts of their population can come up with is "More Guns".
